Mod: Bed Prop Rod
DETAILS: Prop Rod for Corner Bed
The last time my corner bed stayed in the “up” position on its own was when my RV was new, a time when there were no sheets, toppers or blankets on the mattress. Until this mod, it’s been a frustrating experience placing or retrieving items under the bed. I previously replaced the gas strut with two different after-market options, but a more powerful strut ended up being too strong for the wood structure anchor point.
I bought a few materials at Home Depot (pictured above and listed below) and created a prop rod to hold the bed in the open position. I used a hack saw to cut the aluminum square tube to approximately 28” in length (determined by the chosen pivot point and whatever length creates a square right angle to the bottom of the bed). I also created a small resting “shelf” to hold the prop rod in the down (horizontal) position and out of the way of the storage items. I padded the “shelf” with a felt pad so that it’s silent when driving down the road.
